A few clients (and my mother) have asked about the Conficker worm, so here is a little blog post to address the issue.

Conficker is a highly intelligent virus and was first introduced in October 2008. Since then, it has has rapidly spread across the Internet, infecting over 9 million PCs. On April 1st it will activate, becoming a massively powerful botnet (a collection of robots, acting under the control of the virus creator). It is not known what will happen when this virus activates, so it is important to protect yourself. Here are a few simple steps ->
Step 1 – Download and install Microsoft Security Update MS08-06
- Microsoft Security Update Ms08-06 (Windows XP)
- Microsoft Security Update Ms08-06 (Windows Vista)
- Microsoft Security Update Ms08-06 (Windows Vista 64-bit)
* If your operating system is not listed click here for a complete list of available patches.
Alternatively, visit Microsoft Update and apply all critical updates.
Step 2 – Install and run Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal tool to scan for existing Conficker infections.
Step 3 – Scan your PC with antivirus software. SOHO DVC recommends AVG Anti-Virus. If you are a home user, you may download the free version here.
